Ten years ago, I probably would’ve thought this record was okay. I used to really like the Dead Kennedys, and Das Klown sound like a lightweight, more technically proficient DKs. You might actually mistake some of the guitar leads for East Bay Ray’s and the singer’s voice has a definite Jelloesque quality. The DKs’ wit and (sometimes truly annoying) political activist paranoia are missing here, however. Instead, you get the mundane punk rock unemployment/anti-drug/alienation schtick that never fails to bore. That, and the cheaply done over-production, makes Laughing Stalk something to stay the hell away from.
