The Adults – Action Street – Review

The Adults

Action Street (Mekkatone)
by Austin Nash

Known for their vastly entertaining live shows in their home town, Austin TX, The Adults bring us a very tense, edgy brand of surf-swing-punk that often sounds like a vinyl record winding up a rubber band mechanism that gradually slows to a stop. The kind of groan one would expect from a tire rubbing against a dented fender on a 3 am drunken drive home.

The key to Action Street is the originality of sound and idea combined with a tasteful, almost spoken vocal line. It is further proof that melody can exist within a deranged social milieu and a never-ending array of inane characters. The attitude and image are consistently weird throughout the album and require the listener to use imagination, a rare event.

Action Street is a blissful escape from the childish classroom of grammar punk – thought provoking, interesting, and a keen restoration of faith in creative musicianship.
