Ulver – Natens Madrigal – Review

Ulver

Natens Madrigal (Century Media)
by Scott Hefflon

Norwegian Black Metal that makes my skin want to jump off and go hide in the closet. Ulver, which means “wolf” in Norwegian, attempts to capture the romanticism and brutality of lycanthropy – the mystery, the majesty, and the darkly dangerous beauty of Night and Evil. I don’t see why lycanthropy needs so much high end in the mix, but I’m sure there’s a reason. If you’ve ever wondered what music would best accompany a savage, silver-furred horror tearing flesh from its victim like we shuck corn, carelessly spraying blood, feasting upon freshly slaughtered meat with a ferocity unknown to even the most sadistic of humans, gulp, I think I have a recommendation.
