…Play Nine Songs With Mr. Quintron (Crypt)
by Jon Sarre

The premiere garage rock band in the world has a new record out and that oughta be all the information necessary. If ya want more, well, the identity of this album’s special mystery guest, one Mr. Quintron, is provided in the title and he’s good enough to lend his rolling soul organ to the Oblivians‘ signature juvvie-ds-done-grown-up rock ‘n’ roll sound. Don’t worry, dear purists, the keys addition is a good move here. Quintron beefs up the already-meaty Oblivians stew of reverb-heavy rockabilly, blues, R & B, and trash rock without smoothing out the band’s just fine rough edges. Apparently the four of ’em spent a whole day in the studio cranking out the nine songs (five originals, three gospel (?!!) covers and Jesse Young’s “Mary Lou”) that made it onto the disc. The time frame sounds just about right, cuz you don’t get the feelin’ that any of ’em wasted time sittin’ on their asses frettin’ ’bout settin’s or overdubs. They banged the goddamn thing out and, bein’ the pros they are (or just real lucky), the Brothers Oblivian and Mr. Quintron produced this fine document you oughta be holdin’ in yer hands this very second. Turn off that TV, hail a cab, hop a bus, jack a car, time’s a wastin’, man. Crypt probably only makes so many o’ these things!
