Velour 100 – Of Color Bright – Review

Velour 100

Of Color Bright (Tooth & Nail)
by Jamie Kiffel

Atop a thickly-fluffed bed of smooth, dark guitar chords drifts a powder of feminine voices. Like a choir of drumbeat angels, Velour 100 creates a chant-like mood, dream-dusty within watery musical depths. The sound is slow and flooded, overly plush with child-like high vocals, chiming tambourines, and a wash of mezzo guitars. This is the disc you blindly dig for when, at 3 a.m., your roommate is emitting elephantine nasal utterances, and you must aurally induce sleep. The entire disc is even and unchanging, with slumber-suggestive lyrics such as “I see you when I close my eyes,” and “Your voice is resounding deep in my heart” in “Clouds.” Thick and heavy as a velour blanket, Velour 100 may not be radical pop music revisionists, but they might do medical wonders working with the insomniac set.
