Moby – I Like To Score – Review

Moby

I Like To Score (Elektra)
by Rowan-Morrison

Long before techno was considered radio-friendly and when the word “rave” wasn’t shunned like a toothless dentist, Moby was the shit. No, not “shit,” that title came later, but “the shit,” as in “the bomb.” You see, back in the day, Moby was pumping out quality techno grooves that were fast and furious, while his reputation was comparable to the one that adorns the Chemical siblings. Unfortunately, with age often comes transition, and he ended up retiring his power tools for the guitars and amps of the post-punk scene. However, Moby’s I Like To Score compilation captures a time when he was at his turntable peak. Rather than being a random collection of work, this disc features twelve tracks from various movie scores. The most novel contribution is his club-pummeling take on the James Bond theme that combines it’s standard rhythm with some funky ’70s cop show-conjuring grooves. This track will be featured on the upcoming Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies. Other movie-related offerings include his cuts from Cool World, The Saint, Scream, Heat, Joe’s Apartment, Double Tap, and the obscure Spacewater Onion.
