Beyond Dawn – Revelry – Review

Beyond Dawn

Revelry (Misanthropy)
by Paul Lee

As much as I’m a fan of Scandinavian black metal, it’s actually a relief to hear a group from Norway that doesn’t sing about Satan or Vikings. Beyond Dawn takes a fresh tack with a CD that’s alternately stirring and melancholic. The songs on Revelry are closer to The Cure and Sisters of Mercy than Emperor. At times, BD approach My Dying Bride territory, especially vocally, yet they never really play metal. The addition of a trombone adds a completely different element to the sound along with some subtle keyboard and guitar work. With their beautifully dark vibe, BD have released a great CD that’s worthy of your attention. BD prove that there’s a lot more to Norway than just reindeer and church burnings. Misanthrope Records once again chooses wonderfully unique and creative artists for their roster.
