Cirrus

Back On A Mission (Moonshine)
by Rowan-Morrison

Unloading a double-barrel barrage of beats, raps, scratches, and thick grooves, this three man assault team’s opening track, “Back on a Mission,” sounds like a mesh of Pop Will Eat Itself and early Consolidated. Cirrus‘ aggressive breakbeat bent and their abundance of vocals should land the trio a cozy spot on mix tapes between The Crystal Method, Prodigy, Junkie XL, and Fluke, but they’re not derivative to the point that you can’t tell them apart. One of Cirrus’ distinguishing traits is actually singing on some songs, as opposed to their rap or sample driven tracks that are . However, it’s the rap-oriented jams that pack the hooks. Because “Times Running Out” is the only song that utilizes an orchestral intro, as well as a short symphonic bridge, it stands out among their frequent flavor of the month concoctions. When you add up the pieces, Cirrus only skims the waters of innovation, but their style is addictive and fun enough to appease the rumpshaking scenesters.
