The Queers – Everything’s OK – Review

The Queers

Everything’s OK (Hopeless)
by Scott Hefflon

Everything’s OK is an EP of Joe Queer’s new line-up on his new label. Joe’s voice sounds as good as ever – mellow and stoned-sounding yet not apathetic (as has occasionally happened, but it’s happened to Ben Weasel and Joey Ramone as well, so let’s not take things too personally, huh?), melodic and yummy bubblegummy without the lyrics being completely inane (well, that’s debatable). Opening with the classic-sounding Queers tune “Everything’s OK,” (kinda the opposite of Descendents’ Everything Sucks, huh?) Joe gives the run down of where he’s at today – off the sauce (in theory), gotta new girl (“diggin’ her too”) and he’s havin’ fun, kickin’ back, and “I’m in love with you too.” Thanks Joe, that means a lot. And it’s a good song to sing to girls so they’ll think I’m sensitive and stuff. “Queerbait” is a great title (can’t believe they didn’t think of it sooner), and a song as peppy and vital (yet not as harsh/funny) as, say, “Ursula Finally Has Tits” or anything off Love Songs for the Retarded. “Get a Life and Live it Loser” is mean, kinda catchy, and no, I don’t need 1000 words on what a prick Joe Queer is for writing the song. Lots of people can relate to the sentiment, so deal – this is for posterity. And without losing the rest of the band (for various reasons), the two new Ferris Bueller-looking guys would never get the chance to be in The Queers. And boy do they look happy! The EP closes with Banana Splits’ “I Enjoy Being a Boy” which works great as a Queers tune.
