Trona – Red River – Review

Trona

Red River (Roadrunner)
by Katy Shea

The brilliant underbelly of Boston rock, Trona delivers a solid release filled with everything from driving guitar rock and cow-punk to power ballads all conferred with confidence and potency. The vocal harmonies are rich and warm, lending a keen urgency to the ballads, especially “Johnny Quick,” and a unique energy to the driving country-inspired tunes like “My Own Train,” and “Sail Into The Storm.”

Leahy’s vocals are compelling and versatile, ethereal and Earthy within the same song – she provides an anchor for the band’s sound, which remains tangible and focussed throughout all the genres they explore. The guitar sound is equally versatile, vacillating between jangly pop, country twang and power chords, complementing the vocal lines and rounding out the cohesive sound that emerges powerfully on this release. Red River displays the talent of the band well, capturing the vitality of their live shows without sacrificing production quality. Definitely their best record to date.
