Poundhound – Massive Grooves – Review

Poundhound

Massive Grooves (Metal Blade)
by Martin Popoff

Doug’s Poundhound project is (quite thankfully) very much like a King’s X record. Only Doug has, quite predictably, blasted it with heavier, bass-throbbing tones. It’s a big, swoopy, rhythmic, grinding affair. As Doug puts it, the work of a guy who is “one third of King’s X.”

“I needed to do this simply because I write so much music, there’s no way for King’s X to do it all. Plus, I wanted to do something on my own to show my identity, not as one-third of King’s X – something I had control of completely, without any outside interference. It was just an outlet for me. It’s my side of King’s X, like Ty’s record is his side of King’s X. Ty has a heavy side, but he basically likes melodic pop stuff. Whereas with me, I’m the heavy side. That’s our balance. I’ve got probably 300 songs from the last ten years, just these demos with me doing guitar, drums, bass, and vocals, and there’s a vibe that I create on my own, like anyone else would do if they were doing it by themselves. And I’ve grown accustomed to it, and a lot of my friends have too, so everybody said ‘Why don’t you make a solo record?’ So I sent Metal Blade a tape, and they signed me up for four albums. I actually wrote like 50 songs over the last few years. I’ve got enough ready for another Poundhound record which will be out in about a year.”
