Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – Are a Drag – Review

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Are a Drag (Fat)
by Scott Hefflon

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is a gimmick band, as we all know, and I for one thought the joke didn’t last very long. The execution of Have a Ball was pathetic, simply going through the motions and accidentally hitting it right cuz all members of this “punk all-star cover band” are so fuckin’ good, they don’t even have to try. And they didn’t. With Fat Mike from NOFX, Joey and Dave from Lagwagon, Chris from No Use for a Name, and Spike from Fat’s mailroom (and now evidently in The Swingin’ Utters), you kinda expect more. This time out, Spike sings a bit better, but that’s not really saying a helluva lot. Truthfully, the best thing about this record is that I only got the advance (no artwork or track listing, and the bio says nothing helpful except these are “show tunes,” which isn’t exactly true, but I don’t give enough of a shit to do a track-by-track ass-shredding review of this fucker), so the first time I listened to it in its entirety (that would be, um, right now), I had no idea what songs were on it. And if/when I ever put this CD on again, it’ll all be new to me again. Joy.
