Lonely Kings – What If? – Review

Lonely Kings

What If? (Fearless)
by Tim Den

What if the rest of the record sounded like the first 20 seconds of the opening track? I probably would’ve loved it. Heavy without being overwhelming, attentive to atmosphere and breathing room, and with a nice driving beat. Then, Oops!, the rest of the song comes in. One word: bland. The bio calls Lonely Kings everything from Jawbreaker to Samiam to Face To Face, but the truth is they’re aiming way too high. Come on, let’s not kid ourselves… By-the-books pop-punk with a bit of hardcore attitude thrown in isn’t going to transform genres like the big boys mentioned. And what’s this about the drummer being the son of Jonathan Richman?
