Dread Kennedys: In Dub We Trust – Review

Dread Kennedys

In Dub We Trust: A Tribute to the Dead Kennedys (Invisible)
by Lex Marburger

Another good idea ruined by “what were they thinking?” Industrial-ish bands cover DK tunes. Well, Jello is on record for being “into the idea,” or so sez the liner notes. Be warned that none of the covers are punk, dub, or reggae. The only thing that connects the covers to the originals is a production quality as thin as a tequila shit. But who am I to complain? Some of the mellow industrialists include Pigface, Sheep on Drugs, Attrition, TRS-80, and Phylr. One highlight of note: “Jock-O-Rama” by 7000 Dying Rats includes many samples from Revenge of the Nerds, including the song the nerds performed near the end. Bonus point for the liner notes cross promoting the DK back catalog, even though Invisible won’t make money off of it. Punk rock! Other Doped-up Kennedy cover-ers include: Meg Lee Chin, Moscow Machine Gun, Resident Phase Shifter, Bagman, The Truth, Subgenius, and The Fork.
