Ha ha. Almost missed the joke on this one. Imagine a revolutionary Austin Powers. Someone who takes ’60s camp waaaaay too seriously. Yeah. Happy, psychedelic pop music, in the style of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. But by a self-important revolutionary beatnik poet. Then you realize that David Candy is actually Ian Svenonius, singer of Nation of Ulysses, and Play Power is yet another attempt to lure passersby into acts of rebellion and subversion. Or something like that. Kinda like how Refused splintered into The (International) Noise Conspiracy, from hardcore punk into… well, pop, really. Then you start to get it. Amusing, but no real lasting power. The mellow rant on “Diary of a Genius” is fun, though.
