David Singer – The Cost of Living – Review

David Singer

The Cost of Living (Deep Elm)
by Tim Den

Piano-based, Elliott Smith-ish pop tunes supported by the occasional orchestra/tape loop. He takes on too much sometimes, especially during “I Need to Be Able to See You,” where he mimics DJ Shadow to poor results. Most of the songs are pretty decent, but a lack of uniqueness (he really sounds like Elliott Smith) and a tendency to over-estimate his abilities (especially his vocals) set him back. A dose of temperament and a few lessons in compacting his melodic hooks should help.
