Enon – Believo! – Review

Enon

Believo! (See Thru)
by Lex Marburger

OK, this is indie rock I can get into. Enon is comprised of John Schmersal from Braniac and the two drummers from Skeleton Key. A good combination. This time out, Rick Lee (one of the SK guys), former “found percussionist,” has traded in his junkyard of steel and tin for a junkyard of electronic gadgets that bleep and burble in the most wonderful of ways, but not at the sake of actual songwriting. While the songs slide around between arty pretension and psycho-freak-out, they always come back to some sort of pop sensibility. Well, “sensibility” may be the wrong word, but there is form in there, peeking out between the clanks and tweaks, but they’ll never be radio hits. Think of it as Soul Coughing without the heavy funk leanings, with a heavy dose of Sebadoh (the early years) thrown in. Or something. Anyway, they deserve to be liberated from a Ramen noodle diet, so check ’em out.
