A Planet for Texas – You Can Still Rock in America – Review

A Planet for Texas

You Can Still Rock in America (Diaphragm)
by Craig Regala

I’ve seen A Planet For Texas a couple times and they play faster than the material can hold. The bulk of said material is on the “zoop-zoop” pop/punk melodic vocal side, without any of the dry-cleaned bullshit radio rock production. They do it A-OK and anyone who has, say, some of the releases on Honest Don’s may dig this. The two cuts I really like (the first and last) shun the dreaded “zoop-zoop” and go for the opening slot at the next Zeke show. Tell you what – I’ve wanted to organize a tribute show to the greatest of ’80’s record labels, SST, for a couple years, and I’d buy the beer for these guys if they’d play 45 minutes of Hüsker Dü tunes. The cover of “Crimson and Clover” is lots better than Joan Jett’s but pales next to what they’d do to the Night Ranger tune of their record title.
