Cabana Beach Club – Review

Cabana Beach Club

(Street Beat)
by Lex Marburger

Like we need another sub-genre in electronica, now there’s “chillout”… Not as ballsy as dub, not as quiet as ambient, more of a wishy-washy, post-ecstacy party, background music to get stoned to. Think of the last half of Moby’s Play, but without all the downer vibes (and, to be honest, talent). Add waaaay to much reverb, some Latin-flavored beats and a few guitar wanks, and you’ve pretty much got Cabana Beach Club. Essentially, this is what all those people who used to listen to worldbeat have switched to. And you don’t want to be like them, do you? Didn’t think so. I guess you could argue that since I’m not stoned, I can’t rightly judge the CD. But y’know, if I was stoned, I’d probably want to listen to Iggy and the Stooges, not this “Hey man, how mellow” crap. Or maybe Massive Attack. Club-ers include: Brother Lode, Yonder Boi, Nightmares On Wax, Senza, Omegaline, Velvet Monsoon, Meridian Conspiracy, Gobi Tribe, Baptiste Love Rug, Zil Fango, Theivery Corporation, Chichi Peralta, Racoon, and Afton C. And I won’t even make fun of their names. You can do that all by yourselves.
