Duvall – Standing at the Door – Review

Duvall

Standing at the Door (Double Zero)
by Scott Hefflon

In a mere four songs, Duvall put many to shame… Singer Josh Caterer (Smoking Popes singer) has one of those Voices (with a capital V), like Morrissey, a voice you hear once and can recognize instantly forever afterward. And like Morrissey, you can put his voice over the top of completely ordinary music and it takes on new life, bringing smiles to faces and all that. It’s hard for me to get passed that unassuming voice, that delicate quaver, to really dissect the Weezer roll of some tunes and the peppy rockisms of others. Perhaps not the most informative review in the world, especially if you don’t get bowled over by Josh’s voice the way I do, but let’s just say that I don’t fawn easily, so when I do, it means something. If you missed out on the Smoking Popes the first time (I caught on late myself, and have regretted it ever since), here’s a little something to soothe the wound.
