Tommy Guerrero – Junk Collector – Review

Tommy Guerrero

Junk Collector (Beggars Banquet)
by Lex Marburger

Skater/punk/whatever for almost 20 years, Tommy Guerrero has seen his share of the underground. What’s filtered through his brain in that time has come to pass in the Junk Collector EP, a Sebadoh-meets-trip-hop amalgamation that belies his past of opening for bands like DOA and Bad Brains. The opening track, “Rusty Gears Lonely Years” sounds like something off of Money Mark’s Mark’s Keyboard Repair album, lo-fi funk and loop, roughly mic’ed drums and heavy bass. Actually, most of the album revolves around a supple bassline mixed with overblown drums, the creepiest being “Sea Sick,” which adds guitar and keys as flavor and accent, sending the whole thing into bad acid trip nightmare. True, Junk Collector is just a tie-over in between his first album, Little Bit of Nothing and his next full-length, due sometime this year, but what little he gives us only heightens the anticipation.
