Tub Ring – Drake Equation – Review

Tub Ring

Drake Equation (Invisible)
by Lex Marburger

What hath Mr. Bungle wrought? Well, Tub Ring, apparently. Drake Equation was even produced by Bungle’s Trey Spruance. And you know what? It shows. There’s not so much of the ska/polka element in the let’s-throw-all-the-styles-of-music-into-a-bowl-and-smoke-it-with-a-metal-chaser songs, but it’s got that circus sideshow organ sound, and the talent is there, switching up styles at the drop of a dime (bag). Another difference: The lyrics seem to revolve around sci-fi imagery. Tub Ring works in small doses, but tends to wear thin after a point. Intellectually interesting, technically superior, but it just doesn’t hit you in the gut, y’know? Kinda like they’re hiding behind technique and cleverness. But if that doesn’t bother you, Drake Equation should sit nicely in the “annoy your parents” section of your CD collection.
