Cannibal Corpse – Gore Obsessed – Review

Cannibal Corpse

Gore Obsessed (Metal Blade)
by Tim Den

This is what… release number ten (counting the Hammer Smashed Face EP and Live Cannibalism)? Do you really need me to explain this band one more time? Eternally gruesome, Gore Obsessed sees Cannibal Corpse continue their refusal to tone down, “musically progress,” or “experiment” with anything other than pure death metal. While some have tired of the thick-riffed, blast-heavy approach of the genre, I must say this band continues to hold my attention by never forgetting the one unspoken rule: “As long as it’s catchy.”

And like release number seven (Gallery of Suicide), Gore Obsessed contains some of Cannibal Corpse’s most accessible (I use the term loosely) material to date. “Pit of Zombies” is practically hardcore, “Dormant Bodies Bursting” is as simple as it is addictive, and “Compelled to Lacerate” recalls the band’s earlier, Kreator-influenced riffing. One word: Hooks. Gore Obsessed‘s got plenty of ’em.

If you like Cannibal Corpse, chances are you’ll love this one. Steadfast to being loyal to their fans, it’s good to know you can always count on these guys to deliver.
