El Gato – We’re Birds – Review

El Gato

We’re Birds (Motherload)
by Tim Den

Fans of Beulah, Elf Power, and early Built To Spill will surely love the slightly browned (by their hometown Texas sun, no doubt) sounds of El Gato. Burnt around the edges in a “lo-fi” kind of way, the Dallas-based quartet stir-fry humming organs with crashing ’70s drumsets, then sprinkle on Orange (as in the brand) guitar distortion as if Nashville started churning out indie rock albums. We’re Birds feels like sitting on your front porch at sunset, looking over the low-to-the-ground houses that spread across the Southern horizon.
