Carcass – Choice Cuts – Review

Choice Cuts (Earache)
by Tim Den

By now, it’s redundant to talk about Carcass‘ importance. From grind/gorecore forefathers to melodic death’s finest practitioners, the band never repeated themselves, nor put out a bad record. So it isn’t too hard for Choice Cuts, a 21-song affair that spans the band’s entire career, to compile their best moments. From the very raw (“Maggot Colony”) to the pretty rough (“Exhume to Consume”), from orgasmic perfection (“Incarnated Solvent Abuse”) to the infuriatingly accessible (“Keep on Rotting in the Free World”), it’s all here, plus two Peel Sessions (the first, from ’89, was previously only available through the Strange Fruit label; the second session makes its first released appearance here). Not only are fans able to witness the incredible rate at which this band matured and transformed, Choice Cuts lives up to its name by offering the best of the best. Aside from the aforementioned tracks, mainstays like “Corporal Jigsore Quandary,” “Heartwork,” and “Buried Dreams” are all here, compiling the faves for those occasions when you just can’t carry the band’s entire catalog in your bag. A best-of from one of metal’s best bands.
