As reliable as always, fellow Lollipop-er – the historian-like Mr. Popoff – returns with The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time, ranking hot slabs of molten steel by votes taken amongst the genre’s participants (bands, journalists, label heads, PR staff, etc.). Like his The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time, Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums not only offers anecdotes from the people who voted, but Popoff’s personal opinion on each record as well, sometimes agreeing (Rust in Peace [#11] = best Megadeth album) sometimes not (Piece of Mind [#8] > The Number of the Beast [#2], he insists). I must say I’m very surprised by how Operation: Mindcrime snuck in at #7, and how …And Justice For All continues to be berated by the metal community. Ah well, to each his/her own, as long as the horns are held high, right?

Hilariously erroneous: Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In (#442), Aerosmith Pump (#435), Skid Row’s debut (#172), Boston (#334), Disturbed The Sickness (#466); surprisingly (but deservedly) honored: Angra Angels Cry (#252), Cannibal Corpse The Bleeding (#284), Dark Tranquillity The Gallery (#320), Death Angel Act III (#328), Suffocation Effigy of the Forgotten (#342), Neurosis Through Silver and Blood (#381).
