The Funeral of God (Ferret)
by Adrian Bromley

Just when we thought Zao was dead and buried, the band returns with a potent debut for Ferret, The Funeral of God. Zao showcases a much heavier and fiery stride, especially on the crushing opener “Breath of the Black Muse.” Listeners are literally tossed around like a rag doll in an empty trunk. And while the band is still firmly rooted in their metalcore/hardcore roots, there’s a definite death metal nod of sorts with this album. Having followed this band for years – over the course of 10 albums – it’s safe to say that Zao are easily one of the most creative and influential bands of this music scene (not to mention the weight they’ve offered to the thriving Christian metal scene), and seem to have quite a bit of creativity left.
