Thor
Thor Against the World (Smog Veil)
by Scott Hefflon
Smog Veil is a Reno-based punk label that puts out non-trendy punk. It’s quite a stretch for them to release Thor. Fuckin’ Thor, for fuck’s sake! Sure, I’m old and have one of his ’80s plodding mid-tempo metal albums. He comes from the Manowar, Rollins, Danzig school of beefcake metal. Now he’s rock’n’roll, produced by Bruce Duff (Adolescents, Adz, Triple X Records) and Frank Meyer (Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs and other bands old rockers fawn about) who’ve done work for Wayne Kramer (MC5), Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), and Cheetah Chrome (Rocket From the Tombs, Dead Boys). So they know old rock’n’roll past its prime. (Hey, I didn’t write the bio, I just know how to read it.) Various old people line up to say nice things about Thor, but if a new Hanoi Rocks album barely makes a dent in the U.S., how’s this always second-rater have a prayer? I hope ya got it out of yer system, dad.
