Summon
Fallen (Moribund)
by Scott Hefflon
This kills! The stack of metal wallets I sift through, trying to be fair and preview, is daunting. Everyone thinks it must be great to hear everything, but 50 metal skinnies in a row takes forever to listen to, and 95% of it is shredding power, no individual style or identity. Problematic, because the bands are tight as a homophobe’s butthole, but it’s just a big blur of interchangeable pounding and shrieking with scary song titles, illegible logos, and high school cover art. Along comes Summon, and while it falls for every clichĂ© in the metal book, it kills. All the rest pale in comparison. This is what they strive for, and this is what they fall far shy of. Shredding necro-thrashy death with all the right ingredients in all the right ratios. Damn near perfect.
