Gut – Shrubbery – Review

Shrubbery
by Scott Hefflon

Ha, this rules. While a lot is pig-grunt metal thunder, there’s swamp boogie and stoner roll here, and long instrumental passages. And it’s not like the band are virtuosos, they just like jamming their simple, straightforward runs. They get a groove, they lock into it, and they’ll move on when they’re good and ready to move on.

The vocals originally threw me, made me crack up, actually, but it’s cuz every meathead metal band in their fuckin’ eyeliner and black tee sounds similar now, only doom and grindcore really vary much. This is nothing like doom or grindcore. It’s also not like Scissorfight, but that bear of a man has a vocal style that’s quite unique as well. No, the dude from Gut sounds a lot like Tom Warrior from Celtic Frost. “Caress into Oblivion,” the “Mexican Radio” cover, all that.

Fuck yeah, get ’em on the mp3 CD.
