Nine. That’s the number of producers The Matches had on Decomposer. For most bands, this would lead to a schizophrenic mess of an album from which they’d never recover. But for a band so intent on being genre-defying, it only helps emphasize their ability to seamlessly transfer from goofy and gross to soulful and serious. Case in point is the thought-provoking “What Katie Said” sandwiched between the more offbeat “Little Maggots” and “Sunburn Vs. The Rhinovirus.” For other bands, the transition would seem awkward and unnatural, but in their own strange way, The Matches are able to pull it off without a hitch.
