Always Haunted

Lyrical cliches abound, but the tunes are solid, the guitarwork and solos are spot-on, and the addition of keyboards adds a new depth to the dark bar rock. The band’s bio claims they’re for fans of Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, and Flyleaf, but that’s because the band wrote their own bio. And the singer is a blonde chick. While each of those band have their faults, they all write songs that smoke anything here. And their lyrics don’t suck. Usually. This is Hulda‘s second attempt, they’ve still got strong ties to the ’80s (band member aren’t exactly twentysomething bright-eyed fashion victims), but this is twice now that I’ve heard something lurking here, something the band simply needs to realize, and then they’ll really have something.

For now, dark bar rock with a female singer who belts out pretty terrible lyrics to good songs. Then again, I’ve always felt much the same about The Pretenders, and look how popular they are, for some reason.
