“Do Not Look Down”
Koloss (Nuclear Blast Records)
release date: 3/26/2012
By Mike Delano

When Meshuggah is firing on all cylinders, they sound like a machine. In a good way. You know, one of those violent, aggressive robotic monstrosities that are always boss fights in video games, or the hulking mech standing between the heroes and the marquee villains in ’80’s action cartoons. The seventh album from the Swedish math metal/progressive metal/mind-melting metal crew is like that: A shiny, evil-intentioned robo-threat with a zillion individual parts moving in perfect harmony while steam expels rhythmically from certain orifices. The worry is that an album that sounds like a mechanized killing machine could come off as cold or impersonal. Koloss kinda does, but is that a bad thing? Not every album is going to warm your soul, and this one certainly doesn’t want to give you a hug. It destroys with deadly accuracy and immaculately programmed efficiency. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfucker in the room, such a task can’t be left to amateurs, you need Meshuggah.
