The Bronx Mark Bronx II’s 15th Anniversary – News

The Bronx Mark Bronx II’s 15th Anniversary with Deep Dive via the Sailor Jerry Podcast

The Bronx, who release their sixth studio album, Bronx VI, on Aug. 27, celebrate the 15th anniversary of Bronx II, the influential SoCal band’s major label debut, via singer Matt Caughthran’s Sailor Jerry Podcast.

“It’s like a hindsight record for me because there’s so much that I can look back on and just see how it changed me as a singer, a band member, a musician, and as an artist,” explains Caughthran, who is joined on the commemorative episode by guitar player Joby Ford and producer Michael Beinhorn. “The first record might have been the mission statement,” Caughthran continues, “but everything we are now was definitely cemented in the writing and recording process of the second record.”

Beinhorn, who produced classic albums such as Soundgarden’s Superunknown, Soul Asylum’s Grave Dancers Union and Hole’s Celebrity Skin, notes: “I was excited to record the record because it touched on things I was familiar with punk rock wise, but they also weren’t afraid to play big rock songs either, which is rare.”

“It’s probably not our most ‘punk album,’ but it created a blueprint for us to go in a lot of different areas musically,” adds Ford. “It was fun, it was cool, and it was one of the best experiences of my life.”

Bronx II was released on July 18, 2006 via Island Def Jam. The 15-track album birthed two videos: “White Guilt” and “History’s Stranglers.” NME said the album, which was included in the venerable outlet’s 50 Best Albums of 2006, is “as nuanced a take on a cocaine-fueled hardcore punk as possible,” PopMatters said “Though they were born out of the fierce West Coast punk of Black Flag, the Bronx have shown us on the second The Bronx that they are comfortable extending that legacy to a more mainstream conception of song structure and melody,” and The Guardian described the collection as featuring “catchy, driving hard rock” and continuing the spirit of “their LA hardcore forebears, Black Flag or the Germs.”
