“Vessel Of Suffering,” the first single from Hulder’s second full-length, Verses in Oath, wastes no time and dives right into the slaughter. Blackened vocals ride boldly atop flutter-picked guitar and rampaging drums. The simple, supportive keyboard melody is a bit upfront in the mix, but at least it’s not frilly. The Northwest US has produced another metal gem, and with brutal but clear production as well: Not overly compressed, not technical and sterilized, and not a single-pitched blur like the sound of a vacuum left on in the next room.
