The Candy Snatchers – Human Zoo – Interview June 1, 1999 An interview with Matthew Odietus & producer Dean Rispler
The Make Up – I Want Some – Review June 1, 1999 They succeed musically, sure. Make-Up’s actually kinda badass’n’rump-shakin’, even while bein’ too mellow to be called “rockin'”.
Beachwood Sparks – “Desert Skies” / “Make It Together” – Review June 1, 1999 Lushly textured jangle pop that sounds real wimpy albeit in a psychedelic manner, but girls probably like it and that’s why the guys do it.
Sarre-Chasm – Living, Breathing, and Sweating the Business – Column June 1, 1999 I must have certifiable rocks in my head to’ve enthusiastically taken on the unenviable task of booking the bands at a club out here in Portland, Oregon.
Los Infernos – “The Outlaw” / “Beer Run” – Review June 1, 1999 It’s almost a throwback to Restless Records’ ’80s heyday as the headquarters for hopelessly glossy metallic thrashabilly.
B.B. King – Blues on the Bayou – Review June 1, 1999 On this outing, even the orchestrations seem pretty damn comfortable, just like Mistah Riley hisself pickin’ an’ grinnin’ on the front cover.
Stuntmen – “Unpaid Vacation” – Review June 1, 1999 Stuntmen hail from Philly and they hone in the prevalent tendency to play real, real fast and lose their collective breath by the end of the song.
Davie Allan and the Arrows – “The Born Losers Theme” – Review June 1, 1999 Fuzz-damaged surf vet instrumentalizes one here that sounds vaguely like “The Battlestar Galactica Theme,” but bleeding out vicious squawking sounds.
Dale Hawkins – Wildcat Tamer – Review June 1, 1999 One could argue that “Susie Q” (which Hawkins has re-recorded for this record) was Dale Hawkins’ moment. If that’s the case it’s a helluva moment.
Mike Ness – Cheating at Solitaire – Review June 1, 1999 Pounding drum beats, lazy-to-furious slide guitar, impeccable production, and the man’s scratchy vocal chordage.
