Fear of God – Toxic Voodoo – Review

Fear of God

Toxic Voodoo (Pavement)
by L. Diablos

What do you do when you’re jaded by your band, your husband, and your record label? If you’re Dawn Crosby, you take a year (or three) to re-examine your life and your creative vision. Overcoming all kinds of conflicts, from domestic disputes to those darn “musical references”, Ms. Crosby recreated Fear of God for herself as well as for you…

What is now Fear of God was once Detente, a band Dawn put together in the ’80s that was heralded among the L.A. thrash at its finest. After three weeks and only two gigs, Detente had a record deal and was on their way… until they broke up six months later. Wanting to move on, but still under contract, Dawn put together the worst demo she could come up with and submitted it to her label (then Metal Blade). “We acted like it was the greatest thing in the world!” tells Dawn. “Our lawyer pounded them to release us by a certain date. And they said, ‘Ugh, that woman.'”

Yes, that woman. A woman that is rumored to be too unstable to ride on her own tour bus. A woman who apparently trashed any room at will. When questioned, Dawn seems to have no explanation. “I’ve heard that they say that. I don’t know why. I’m one of the nicest people.”

Despite what Dawn may or may not do in her down time, when she creates music, it’s no-holds-barred. From her rasps and hollers to her ferociously seductive sighs, Dawn pours her heart out… and leaves it there. The content of her new release is unusual and intriguing, inviting images of submission, taboo, and rage all at once. Fear of God could well be described as a project band between Danzig, Pantera, and White Zombie, fronted by Demi Moore!
