Vocalist Dan Vitale could easily be considered the godfather of Boston’s thriving ska scene. The long-standing frontman for Bim Skala Bim as well as Steady Earnest, Vitale’s impact can be seen in every area ska group, including their nationally Mightier brothers, the Bosstones. Together since 1985, Bim have just released their sixth album, Eyes and Ears, on their own BIB (Big Indie Beat) label. Right on the heels of that we have Steady Earnest’s Take It, Take It, TAKE IT! (DVS), which frankly, seems to have gotten more of the financing pie, as it is a much slicker production in all respects. Both CDs showcase some of the finest ska talent in the area, Steady Earnest being a little more of a pop band. But for my dollar, I prefer Bim trombonist Vinnie Nobile’s live performance to S.E. And if that’s not enough ska for you skankers, check out Mash it Up Vol. III (DVS), which features all the bands mentioned here and then some.
