Swoon 23 – Famous Swan Song – Review

Swoon 23

Famous Swan Song (Tim/Kerr)
by Sheril Stanford

Like a good breakfast cereal, this appealing sugar pop is tasty and sweet, but with a good crunch now and again to wake you up. Slow and spacey, awash with guitars supported by strong drums (interestingly, no bass), and overlaid with the beguiling and childlike voice of Megan Pickerel; Swoon 23 is not just for breakfast anymore.

Imagine a less complex and layered Mazzy Star with Juliana Hatfield singing lead, and you’d have Swoon 23. The tracks are smooth and supple, but with enough hooks to be catchy and the lyrics are dark and slightly creepy (“she hangs dead birds by the kitchen windowsill, she says they make pretty decorations…”). Let’s just say… they’re grrreat!
