Malformed Earthborn – Defiance of the Ugly By the Merely Repulsive – Review

Malformed Earthborn

Defiance of the Ugly By the Merely Repulsive (Release/Relapse)
by Scott Hefflon

The twisted product of a great mind. To say this is not for the weak-stomached would be a gross understatement. Based on their mutual appreciation of Skinny Puppy and Coil, Brutal Truth’s Danny Lilker and Scott Lewis teamed up with Napalm Death’s Shane Embury during the summer of ’92 and February of ’95. The monstrosity that birthed is called Defiance of the Ugly By the Merely Repulsive on Release/Relapse Records. While radioplay and overall commercial success is extremely doubtful, this is truly a grotesque collection of ideas and images with a different voice than its creators are usually credited with.

Industrial/noise/ambient are the chosen terms, but, thanks to overuse, they don’t pack the necessary punch. This is brutal, ugly, non-linear, and chaotic, to even the reasonably well-trained ear. At times it may seem meandering, needlessly repetitive, or excessively ear assaulting, but those were the decisions made by the “band.” I enjoy much of it; some of it is actually painful to sit through, but I recommend it to all who think their tastes are extreme. This ain’t for the kiddies.
