Roger Miller – Elemental Guitar – Review

Roger Miller

Elemental Guitar (SST)
by Clarendon Lavorich

What can one man do? If you’re Roger Miller, quite a bit. With one guitar, he creates an entire band on stage. Give credit to modern electronics -without 16-second delays and other wonders of nature, he couldn’t do what he loves. He creates sonic landscapes we can all hitch hike in, a day trip through the landscapes of his mind. Miller takes the six strings of modern day music construct and turns it into a paintbrush of unlimited colors. His palate goes beyond notes, due to the pedals he has at his disposal. Gravel roads, green fields, concrete jungles… they come to life and talk to you.

He backs himself up in the studio with drums and bass, which give the ruddy complexion that such a cherubic figure needs. They lend a foundation to his “misunderstandings of time” and guide us through his neural pathways and cerebral functions as his guitar transcends space and overcomes convention.

A man who can give us the future of guitar and still pay tribute to an old fortune teller (“Are You Experienced?”) is a man who deserves more, but will always end up with less than he deserves. You can make a difference; you can support this electronic shaman. You can give him the imaginary trading units, and he will take you with him to the further planes of your mind.
