Like Swimming – “Swing It Low”- Review

Like Swimming

“Swing It Low” / “Bought Myself a Steak” (Cosmic)
by Sheril Stanford

This is a single that’s worth searching the bins for. Seriously. Get hold of this disc at all costs. Like Swimming is another one of Mark Sandman’s low key side project and I mean low key. “Swing It Low” features sexy, sinewy, hypnotic song-speak by Morphine’s Sandman set to drums and a repetitive one-note groove that is lazily haunting. “Bought Myself a Steak” is Sandman at his offbeat, lyrical best, with Mark singing sweet ‘n’ low about cookin’ up a rare steak and sautéing mushrooms (“the portobello kind”), accompanied by a stand up bass (I think) and Larry Dersch on drums. A dreamy, half-asleep-in-the-afternoon-while-sounds-rustle-around-you kind of song. And when you wake up, you find someone has made you dinner.
