My Head – Endless Bummer – Review

My Head

Endless Bummer (Capitol)
by Sheril Stanford

This disc is a good example of why you should never jump to conclusions. Digging into the past for your influences is cool, and Jimi Hendrix and Grand Funk Railroad were great bands. And even though many of us hold them in the highest regard, that doesn’t necessarily mean we wanna listen to new bands trying to copy them (or new bands trying to copy other new bands, for that matter). So the temptation was great to immediately write off My Head as another been-there-done-that band when I popped in this disc, pressed track one (“Carnosaur”), and heard a carbon copy of Led Zep’s “The Immigrant Song.” Then came “Point of View,” which sounds like Jimi Hendrix-meets-Silverchair, and I had some serious doubts. Next thing I knew, I was listening to the Cream-influenced “Fall” and ummm… liking it in spite of myself. With Endless Bummer, My Head has managed to pay homage to the past and at the same time, infuse the sound with their own punchy, vibrant take. Familiar but fresh, comfortable but challenging. Adam Siegel functions as songwriter/vocalist/guitarist and his past life included a stint with Infectious Grooves. Bass player Dave Silva was part of adventurous late ’80s – early ’90s Bad Radio, along with pal Eddie Vedder. Drummer Greg Saenz was scooped up because of his ability to duplicate the Black Sabbath sound. Even f the word “retro” skeeves you, be not afraid, oh worthy listener.
