The Good Life – Music For Losers – Review

The Good Life

Music For Losers (Mass Cult)
by Austin Nash

For as cool as the bio says this band is (always good marketing), I am surprised to find I’ve never heard of ’em before. Weaned right here in the chip-flippin’ county of Boston, The Good Life are (just have?) coming off of their debut on Mass Cult entitled Music For Losers. I must say that the strife (or lack there of) that they represent, is something that I can identify with. Technically, if you’re a loser, any music you like is for losers. There are many bands that I’m sure don’t appreciate losers like me liking their stuff.

Music For Losers is one of those precious leftover pieces of creation that grows slowly but steadily, then exceeds predetermined expectations, unlike the S&P 500 (lost more today, Vegas at home, trip and slide). It’s like the contraption in the basement your dad made to put under the tire of a snowbound car, the contraption that didn’t work. Lead singer Jinx’s vocals are a little smooth and clean for my taste (and I taste great), but that’s me. I prefer something that sounds like it’s just been farted out the ass of an aged but still bad as hell WWF hero, rather than through the English horn of a newly borne Prince of Wales. The melodies are pretty, they yell “fuck” a lot, and it sounds like these guys could play a great show. I would clue you locals into one, but the date on the bio says Mama Kin 10/26/96, so I won’t. Besides, what am I, the art fag section of the fuckin’ Phoenix? Pshaw.
