Honkeyball – Onetime – Review

Honkeyball

Onetime (Wonderdrug)
by Scott Hefflon

Skating the line between hard rock and hardcore (not to mention moments of metallic power and grungy melody), Honkeyball burst onto the Boston scene as part of the “loud rock” movement. While there weren’t badges and membership fees, the signs were obvious: Aggressive, loud, rock-based but without pandering to whimsical trends of commercial radio, and basically heavy, gruff, yet melodic in a tough sorta way. Similar to Otis, Quintaine Americana, Slughog, 6L6, and maybe Scissorfight (all of which are on either Wonderdrug or CherryDisc and probably have 7″s on Secular, run by Jonas x-Only Living Witness), Honkeyball drones at times, gets lost occassionally in feedback, and rages like a bull on a Jack Daniels bender. This’d be called Boston Rock if this town weren’t so fuckin’ uptight. Anger is inherent in the system. Simplicity is often the most honest approach. Noise can have melody. Honkeyball rocks.
