Servotron – Entertainment Program for Humans (Second Variety) – Review

Servotron

Entertainment Program for Humans (Second Variety) (Lookout!)
by Rowan-Morrison

Somewhere between the B-52’s and Kraftwerk lurks the retro-electro punk stylings of Servotron. Although their sci-fi image is hyped via their artwork, song titles, lyrics, press kits and live shows, they rarely sing through vocoders or rely on movie samples and sequencers. As a result, Servotron is more of a new wave-basted rock band with a futuristic gimmick than anything connected to the industrial-dance arena. Imagine Rock ‘n’ Roll High School and the accompanying Ramones’ soundtrack rewritten as a space-age opera, the result would be this album. Of course, Servotron’s songs aren’t as fast as the Ramones, and having the Devo-meets-Bratmobile evoking male and female vocalists adds an entirely different vibe. Servotron outputs a fun, complexity-free music ideal for a Flock of Seagulls-themed punk party.
