Pennywise – Straight Ahead – Review

Pennywise

Straight Ahead (Epitaph)
by Tim Den

Do I really have to tell you what Pennywise sounds like? If you’ve ever heard one of their older records – hell, if you’ve ever heard skate pop-punk in general – you’d know what they sound like: Fast drums, anarchistic (yet positive) lyrics, thrashy guitars, and plenty of whoa-whoas (not Ramones whoa-whoas… more like 7 Seconds whoa-whoas). Not unlike every other Epitaph band, in other words. And since Pennywise take as kindly to progression as they do to corporate America, you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll be sounding the way they do for a long while. Fans, throw your hands in the air and rejoice. I’ll wait… All set? Okay. Until Fletcher (guitarist) gets a high school diploma/sobers up/grows 0.00876 of a brain (or the world abolishes expensive shoes; whichever happens first [hint: don’t hold your breath]), you’ll be sure to know what you’re getting with every Pennywise album.
