Eyelid – Conflict’s Invitation – Review

Eyelid

Conflict’s Invitation (Indecision)
by Tim Den

With a name like Eyelid and a bio that stresses their “sonic guitar assault,” I was afraid that yet another sleep-inducing experience was in store for me. “Okay, here we go again. Polka beat, same three chords, Neanderthal breakdowns… same bullshit.” Ho, ho, ho; not this time. I was awakened from my expectations (which’d lulled me in slumber even before the disc was on; a safety precaution learned from previous encounters with hardcore bands) by lethal doses of originality, biting chunks out of my face and everything. The screaming’s urgent, the music’s complex and involved, the playing’s refreshingly unpredictable but still powerful. Eyelid pulls out some intense emotions while they show off their technical skills, almost reminiscent of the Rollins Band at their most warped and tortured. This, to say the least, was not what I’d expected. All I could do while this played was imagine how intense this band would be in a live setting. Heavy in the way it makes you want to move to it, discordant in the way it raises your “musician’s eyebrow,” Eyelid is not a band that can be easily categorized. Feel the power first-hand.
