The Gravel Pit – Silver Gorilla – Review

The Gravel Pit

Silver Gorilla (Q Division)
by Scott Hefflon

Boston’s beloved Gravel Pit, purveyors of pure pop pleasure, return with Silver Gorilla. Collecting kudos like children gather garishly-painted Easter eggs, The Gravel Pit have taken home Boston Music Awards and been credited with “Bringing the Boston sound to Boston.” Since their move from New Haven in ’95, The Pit have wooed fans and critics alike with their smart lyrics, infectious melodies, and bouncy paces. They’ve been called quirky more than anyone this side of They Might Be Giants, but if the jeweled shoe fits, click your heels together.

Silver Gorilla combines explosive guitar, beefy vocals that pour like syrup on a sundae and occasionally snarl like metal scraping concrete, and beats that bop, slam, and generally move your butt. With the inclusion of organ and soulful guitarwork, The Gravel Pit transcend sugar-coated pop fixations and give you meat to sink your teeth into. These snappy dressers are notorious for whipping crowds into a frenzy like so much batter, then baking their brains with full-on rock mayhem, and coating memories with sweet melodies.
