Voivod and Celtic Frost used to be my “art metal” faves, simply because most of my Anthrax and Megadeth-loving brethren thought they were too weird, ugly-sounding, and kinda uncomfortable to listen to. Voivod created an art style and (I think) their own font while that Rob Zombie guy was still doodling in high school notebooks and trying to score with cheerleaders. I only followed them until ’87’s Killing Technology, but moments of Dimension Hatröss and Nothingface were pretty damn cool, like their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine.” Evidently Voivod released a greatest hits in ’92, so between that and this here live CD, ya oughtta brush up on this distinctive, influential metal band. And if you think they’re too weird, just pretend you get it like everything else and hope no one notices.
